I was beginning to wonder if Van Johnson's character was heterosexual. Ms. Vera Miles was a beautiful woman in this film. Good movie. Hollywood did a good job finding British actors that were intelegible for most people that speak English unlike most Brits that have accents so strong they don't understand each other well. Yes, I know. I work mostly with Brits and it is common for them not to understand each other well. Not just accent but their provincial slang that they refuse to eradicate in certain settings (like international work) in order to be understood. Brits speaking is akin to Black Americans.....it's a language unto itself. I always chuckle (silently) when Brits go on about the "King's English"....lol....yea, right....hello Liverpool, Newcastle & Birmingham.

Van Johnson is not one of my favorite actors. Despite his starring role, I like this film very much for its mystery plot and its beautiful camerawork depicting London in the 1950s. Too bad, though, that the 1939 British film 'The Nursemaid Who Disappeared' which is based on the same Philip Macdonald novel, never seems to be available anywhere. It would be nice to be able to see the two versions and compare them.

This film was made in 1956 I believe - the same year as the Clean Air Act was passed. Just looking at all that smog and the coal-grimed buildings and you can see why the Act was necessary. The wheels of government run slowly and the Act was passed as a result of the "Great Smog" of 1952 which was so bad, an estimated 12000 people died as a result in the months following. But also, the "pea soup" fogs of London had been noted as far back as the mid 19th Century and in 1880, meteorologist Rollo Russell wrote an influential pamphlet, _London Fogs,_ noting that "numerous deaths occur in the course of the year from smoke-fogs, not unusually thick, producing or increasing diseases of the lungs". A further clean air act was also passed in 1968.
